Transforming the Fine Arts Museum of Charleroi by Goffart-Polomé Architectes

The overarching goal of the project is to repurpose the Defeld building, which served as the gendarmerie stables for over a century, into a fine arts museum that captivates visitors and beckons them to explore the historic heart of Charleroi. Originally, this listed building had its entrance situated around the esplanade of the police station, providing indirect access from the public space.

In a bid to enhance the museum’s visibility from Boulevard Mayence, the proposed project reintroduces an entrance from the public space, accentuated by a monumental portico crafted from architectural concrete. Serving as the sole exterior intervention on the Defeld stables, the portico bestows the museum with its distinct identity, setting it apart visually from the nearby police tower.

The gable facade serves as the access portal akin to a narthex, delineating an intermediate space that signifies the transition between the sidewalk and the agora. Acting as a prelude, this space guides visitors on a contemplative journey, where light and artworks are meticulously showcased within a structured and adaptable environment.

The program for the new Charleroi Museum of Fine Arts encompasses two main components: the agora and temporary exhibitions on the first floor, and the permanent exhibitions on the upper level. A key challenge of the project lies in effectively articulating these two programs spatially. To address this, a new monumental staircase serves as the nexus between the floors, fostering a significant visual connection between them. The previously superimposed floors now interact harmoniously, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for visitors.
