Renovation of Fifth NRE Jazz Club by De Bever Architecten

In Eindhoven, the former NRE site has undergone a transformation led by De Bever Architecten, resulting in a contemporary center. Originally designed as a gas factory by architect Louis J.P. Kooken (1867-1940), founder of De Bever Architecten, the site possessed distinctive architectural qualities.

The central building, known as “Building 5,” was targeted for repurposing into a jazz club, restaurant, café, and coffee roaster by the client Okko Project. Preserving the monumental quality and existing architectural details was paramount, leading to an approach that aimed to minimize visible interventions.

This objective was realized by seamlessly integrating modern sustainable elements with the existing structure, maintaining the exterior and interior surfaces in their original character. New windows were seamlessly incorporated into the interior, preserving the integrity of the exterior façade. The only visible alterations from the exterior are two additions made of steel and glass, serving as a new entrance and lounge area.

To optimize the utilization of the existing building, a clear circulation path was established. This routing effectively integrates the new functions with the existing and new architectural elements, fostering spatial coherence and connectivity throughout the building.
