Embracing Timelessness: Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah

AGo Architects crafted Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah, a three-story mosque with a school on the ground floor, nestled in a dense neighborhood facing a commuter train station. Rooted in the philosophy of Frank Gehry, who believed that architecture should reflect its era while aspiring for timelessness, the mosque stands as a beacon of timeless design and cultural integration.

Architectural Timelessness

Drawing inspiration from early mosques in the Islamic tradition, Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah eschews overt symbolism in favor of a timeless aesthetic. While many contemporary mosques feature strong symbolism and elaborate designs, this mosque harks back to a simpler form, emphasizing site context, climate, culture, and passive design strategies to create a lasting architectural statement.

Historical and Cultural Influences

In Indonesia, mosque architecture has evolved over centuries, blending influences from Hindu/Buddhist temples, East Asian pagodas, and Middle Eastern styles introduced during the colonial period. Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah embraces this cultural diversity, recognizing that mosque architecture embodies the identity of the community it serves and can evolve uniquely in different contexts.

Architectural Strategies

The design of Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah emphasizes environmental sustainability and community engagement. Three sloping roofs divide the mosque into distinct areas, providing shade and shelter while symbolizing the word ‘Allah’ when viewed from certain angles. The integration of natural light and ventilation ensures thermal comfort without the need for artificial cooling, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for worship and social interaction.

Promoting Community Interaction

Beyond its religious function, Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah serves as a hub for community engagement. Open courtyards and accessible public spaces invite activities and interaction, blurring the boundaries between the mosque and its surrounding neighborhood. Stairs, terraces, and courtyards create informal gathering spaces, fostering a sense of inclusivity and belonging.

Masjid Jami’ Al-Hurriyah exemplifies the fusion of tradition and innovation, creating a timeless architectural masterpiece that resonates with its community and environment.
