Uber, the prominent ride-hailing company, has unveiled a new safety feature within its app, enabling both drivers and riders to record audio during trips. Initially launched as “Audio Recording” in Latin America, the feature aims to bolster safety measures for Uber users in the region. It has since been rolled out to over a dozen countries across Latin America, including Brazil and Mexico.

Enhanced Privacy and Safety Measures

In a bid to safeguard privacy, Uber encrypts and stores the audio files locally on the devices of both the rider and driver. By default, access to the audio recordings is restricted, including by Uber. However, users have the option to attach the audio file to a safety report submitted to Uber if necessary. This approach ensures that audio recordings are only accessible under specific circumstances, preserving user privacy while enhancing safety.

Activation and Usage

Upon enabling the feature, riders and drivers can initiate audio recording by tapping the shield icon on the map screen and selecting “Record Audio.” Users have the flexibility to choose whether to record individual trips, with drivers having the additional option to keep the feature active while online. The widespread adoption of this feature across Latin America underscores its effectiveness in fostering a sense of safety and security among Uber users.

Expansion of Safety Technologies

In addition to the audio recording feature, Uber has expanded the capabilities of its RideCheck technology. RideCheck now includes enhanced functionality to detect unexpected deviations from the intended route or premature trip endings. Originally introduced in 2019, RideCheck utilizes GPS data and smartphone sensors to identify potential safety concerns during trips, such as accidents or prolonged stops.

Proactive Safety Alerts

Responding to driver feedback, Uber is set to launch a proactive audio seat belt alert feature. This feature will remind riders to fasten their seat belts at the beginning of a trip. The audio alert, emitted from the driver’s device, will be accompanied by a push notification to the rider’s phone, prompting them to buckle up. This proactive approach aims to promote seat belt usage and foster a safer environment for both drivers and passengers.

Uber anticipates that these new safety features will contribute to increased awareness and adherence to safety protocols, ultimately enhancing the overall safety and security of Uber trips. The company plans to make the audio seat belt alert feature available nationwide in the near future, reflecting its commitment to prioritizing safety in every aspect of the ride-sharing experience.
