Mobile App Spending Trends: Apple’s App Store Leads

In 2021, global spending on mobile apps is expected to reach $133 billion across Google Play and Apple App Store, marking a significant rebound from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the previous year. This surge represents a 19.7% increase from the $111.1 billion spent in 2020 and encompasses expenditures on in-app purchases, premium apps, and subscriptions across both platforms.

App Store Dominance Continues

Sensor Tower’s research indicates that the App Store maintains its dominance in revenue generation compared to Google Play. The App Store is projected to generate $85.1 billion in revenue in 2021, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 17.7% from $72.3 billion in 2020. Similarly, Google Play witnessed significant growth, with revenues reaching $47.9 billion, a 23.5% increase from $38.8 billion the previous year. This growth resurgence is attributed to the market’s recovery following the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, with further expansion anticipated in the upcoming year.

Top Revenue-Generating Apps

TikTok retains its position as the highest revenue-generating app of the year, followed closely by YouTube, Piccoma, Tinder, Disney+, and Google One. Notably, TikTok leads in App Store revenues, while Google One dominates the charts on Google Play. Despite regulatory challenges and bans in certain regions, TikTok maintained its revenue supremacy, underscoring its global popularity and monetization potential.

Shifting Download Trends

While TikTok remains a powerhouse in revenue generation, its download numbers experienced a decline compared to the previous year, attributed in part to bans in key markets such as India. Facebook emerged as the most downloaded app on Google’s platform, despite a dip in overall installations. Other top apps in terms of downloads include Meta-owned Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, reflecting the enduring popularity of social networking platforms.

Rise of Mobile Gaming

Mobile gaming witnessed substantial growth in 2021, with spending reaching $89.6 billion across both platforms. This figure represents a 12.6% increase from $79.6 billion in 2020, reaffirming gaming’s status as a dominant revenue driver in the app ecosystem. While gaming apps accounted for 67.4% of all in-app spending, this share is marginally lower than in 2019, indicating diversification within the app economy.

Gaming Revenue Leaders

PUBG Mobile retained its position as the top revenue-generating gaming app, with Honor of Kings leading the App Store charts and Moon Active’s Coin Master dominating Google Play. Garena Free Fire emerged as the most popular app overall in terms of downloads, with PUBG Mobile leading among gaming apps on Apple’s platform.

Overall, the mobile app landscape continues to evolve, driven by shifting consumer behaviors and technological advancements. As app usage becomes increasingly integral to daily life, platforms like the App Store and Google Play serve as pivotal hubs for innovation, entertainment, and commerce.
